The Bandar Magistrate’s Court fined a 31-year-old local woman BND1,500 yesterday following her guilty plea for stealing a purse containing cash and cards at a shop in Rimba.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Sabrina binti Haji Mahmud in pursuing the facts of the case in court stated that the defendant, Dayangku Fartina binti Pengiran Metussin, a designer and sales marketing employee at a private company on February 8, at around 6.15pm went into the shop in search for fabrics.

As she was browsing through with some fabrics in hand, she saw an unzipped handbag containing a green purse placed below a table inside the shop.

This was when she formed the intention to steal and left the shop with the purse.

She went into the female public toilet and found that the purse contained BND450.

She transferred the cash into her own handbag, disposed the bag in a rubbish bin and returned to her house in Lambak Kanan. The same night, at around 9.30pm, the complainant, a supervisor at the shop noticed her missing purse and lodged a police report.

Investigations by the Berakas Police Station led to the arrest of the defendant, as her actions were recorded on CCTV.

In her statement to the police, Dayanku Fartina confessed to her crime and admitted that she used some of the money.

Police recovered BND438.

The stolen purse, identification cards, driving licence and debit cards were recovered and were handed over to the police by a rubbish collector.

While handing out the sentence, Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman highlighted that theft is a serious offence and the defendant had benefitted from someone else’s money.

Upon failure of settling the fine, the defendant will serve two months in prison.
