ANN/THE STRAITS TIMES – A woman in Japan was arrested for allegedly squashing a sweet bun without buying it.
The woman, 40, left the Lawson convenience store in Japan’s south-western city of Fukuoka despite the owner’s demands for her to pay for the bun, said media reports.
The owner tailed her for one kilometre after she left the shop and restrained her, before calling the police, reported BBC.
She was subsequently arrested on suspicion of destruction of property, reported Japanese news outlet The Mainichi.
The woman, who claimed to be unemployed, denied the allegations and said she had “only pressed it lightly in my hand to check the firmness of the bread”.
She had allegedly picked up a bag of four black sesame and cream cheese buns, which cost about JPY180, and pressed one of the buns with her right thumb.
According to The Mainichi, the police said that the damaged bun was no longer in its original shape. This meant that the entire bag could not be sold. The owner also said this was not the first time the woman was seen squashing bread.
