Villain role leads Wu Chun to award

BRUNEI superstar Wu Chun has won the Best Breakthrough Performance Artist award for his role in Martial Universe at the 2019 Shanghai Television Festival.

Also known as the Shanghai International Television Festival, Shanghai Television Festival (STVF) is the first and one of the major television festivals in East Asia.

Held since 1986, STVF is one of the most influential and prestigious international television festivals in Asia.

Wu Chun played the role of an antagonist/villain possessed by an evil spirit in Martial Universe which is one of China’s biggest and most acclaimed drama series.

Martial Universe has a viewership numbering nearly two billion. It took Wu Chun a year to complete shooting for the drama, which is by far the longest of his showbiz career.

The drama is based on the novel Wu Dong Qian Kun by Tiancai Dudou set in a magical world, which includes adventure, romance and fantasy.

Wu Chun in a statement in his Weibo account, which has 10 million followers said, “Sometimes, breaking through in acting does not only require a lot of courage, but also a good opportunity. All the sacrifices, fear, hard work, excitement, worries and sleepless nights lasted almost one year and only I know how tough it is to undergo the pressure and stress from this role.”

He added, “Staying positive is key for my preparations and I believe it’s not always having the mindset to be successful, but always embrace a mindset of learning.”

Wu Chun also expressed, “I am very grateful of getting the opportunity to play such a sophisticated role and it’s this strong urge to thrive and to keep on growing that makes me grow stronger. From my heart, thanks to everyone who gave me this opportunity and inspiring me to keep getting better and better in all I do. This award is for all of you!”

Martial Universe which began filming in the late 2016, premiered in middle August (2018). It is aired in China, the United States, Canada, Latin America, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and South Korea.

STVF awards are presented to international and national productions, through voting by a panel of award-winning actors, producers, directors and writers.

It is considered to be one of the most prestigious television awards, alongside the Feitian Awards and Golden Eagle Awards.
