Vietnam registers nearly 2.26 million COVID-19 cases

HANOI (XINHUA) – Vietnam recorded 13,694 new COVID-19 cases yesterday, including 13,656 locally transmitted and 38 imported, according to its Ministry of Health.

The Vietnamese capital Hanoi remained the locality with the highest number of infections yesterday with 2,924 cases, followed by the central Da Nang city with 876 cases and the northern Bac Ninh province with 803 cases.

On the same day, health authorities also documented 12,084 COVID-19 cases detected earlier in Bac Ninh province and 3,988 cases in the southern Ben Tre province.

The infections brought the total tally to 2,263,053 with 37,668 deaths. Nationwide, as many as 2,017,615 COVID-19 patients have so far recovered.

Some 181.1 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines, including 27.9 million third shots, have been administered, according to the ministry.

Vietnam has by far gone through four coronavirus waves of increasing scale, complication, and infectivity.

As of yesterday, the country has registered nearly 2.26 million locally transmitted cases since the start of the current wave in April last year. It has also confirmed 184 cases positive with the new Omicron variant of the virus, said the ministry.
