VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN) – The town of Vangvieng is the star attraction in Vientiane province where officials are rolling out the welcome mat for Visit Laos Year 2018.
The tourism promotion programme was officially launched during the Hmong ethnic group’s New Year festival, known as Boun Kinchieng, held in Phonkham village, Phonhong district, last week.
The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Ounthuang Khaophan, Deputy Governor of Vientiane province Singkham Khongsavanh, and local authorities.
The highlights of the festival included buffalo fighting, in which at least 10 pairs of buffalo locked horns in the ring, with this year’s contest being larger than in past years.
There were also cultural shows by Hmong performers, a fashion show, mini marathon and a market fair, where vendors sold agricultural produce and handicrafts. Other activities also took place on the sidelines of the main event.
Vientiane authorities chose Vangvieng district to spearhead their promotion of the province because the town and its environs have many places of interest, mostly involving striking scenery, the Xong River, and various adventure activities.
A senior official from the Information, Culture and Tourism Office in Vangvieng district, Savai Phommakaisone, said “Vangvieng has many attractions such as Jang and Poukham caves, the Blue Lagoon and Aang Luang cave.”
“We have also opened up some new places for visitors including Nam cave, a site at Pha Ngern mountain, and some other sites near Poukham cave,” he said.
Visitors can enjoy a raft of activities such as kayaking, tubing, boating, and zip lining.
In the future, Vangieng authorities plan to develop infrastructure and create more tourist attractions in a bid to draw more domestic and foreign visitors to the province.
