US Embassy in Brunei hosts presidential election watch

The Embassy of the United States (US) in Brunei Darussalam hosted a 2024 Presidential Election Watch event yesterday morning at a hotel in the capital.

During a press interview on the sidelines of the event, US Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Caryn McClelland, said the relationship between the US, Brunei Darussalam, and ASEAN would remain unchanged, regardless of the election outcome.

“American democracy will continue, regardless of how the election turns out. The relationship between the US and Brunei will remain on the same trajectory and will continue to progress,” the ambassador said.

She added, “We will continue to strengthen the foundation we have built over the past 40 years.”

The ambassador also emphasised that Brunei Darussalam “plays an important role in this region,” and that the bilateral relationship would continue to thrive.

“Our nations’ bonds have been strong and lasting over the past 170 years, across numerous US administrations.”

The event gathered Bruneian US exchange alumni, government officials, civil society members, and business leaders to discuss the US electoral system, democratic values, and the significant role elections play in shaping US foreign policy and leadership.

Guests also had the opportunity to witness the US democratic process in action, reflecting core American values of transparency and civic engagement. – James Kon
