A 22-year-old permanent resident was sentenced to 16 months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday after he pleaded guilty to stealing a bicycle.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Sabrina binti Haji Mahmud revealed in court that Abdul Hakim bin Abdullah was roaming the first floor of Bangunan Halimatul Saadiah in Gadong at 4.46pm on December 6 when he came across an unattended bicycle.
He took the bike and headed to his home in Kampong Bakut. Throughout the journey, he would stop to ask if anyone was interested in buying it off him. He finally found a buyer and sold it for BND30.
The owner realised that the bicycle had gone missing, checked the CCTV camera to find a footage showing the defendant. He filed a police report that led to the defendant’s arrest.
On handing the jail sentence, Senior Magistrate Hajah Azrimah binti Haji Abdul Rahman saw the aggravated feature of the case by the fact that the defendant was not deterred by his previous conviction for theft in 2018 and said that “criminal law is publicly imposed not only with the objective of punishing those who commit crime but also in the hope of preventing it”.
