UNISSA scouts hold camp training for 30 new recruits

The 1102 Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) Rover Scout Crew held a one-day Fourth Basic Camping training for 30 new Rover Scout members of the August 2022 intake at the National Scout Training and Activity Centre, Brunei Darussalam Scouts Association Complex, Jalan Gadong recently.

The course provided exposure and basic knowledge about operating a camp while also improving the identity of its members.

UNISSA Rover Scout leader trainers, Zainudin bin Haji Ishak and Haji Junaidi bin Haji Hussin; Temburong District Scout Commissioner Jurkarnain bin Hussin; Scout Leader Rakob bin Nasir; and Brunei-Muara District Assistant Scout Commissioner for Training and Cub Scout sections Ritchie bin Siabu led the leadership and skills training.

Also present was Scout Chief Commissioner Haji Awang Badar bin Haji Awang Ali; UNISSA lecturer and leader of the 1102 UNISSA Rover Scouts Crew Dr Muhammad Alif bin Haji Sismat; Public Relations and Publication Scout Commissioner Mohammad Syahmi bin Halimshah; Acting Head Quarters Scout Commissioner for Rover Scout Section Mohammad Najib bin Abdul Hamid; and Brunei-Muara District Scout Commissioner Samsuddin bin Haji Ahmad.

Prior to the camp, members of the UNISSA Rover Scouts underwent a six-week leadership and skills training programme to obtain the World Scout membership badge under the supervision of Dr Muhammad Alif.

Scouts were taught the use of finger-signs when making the scout salute; reciting the scout pledge; the explanation and practical training for the flag ceremony; scout promise; scout law; flag folding; log book; correct wearing of scout uniform; history of the establishment of the scout movement; basic training of foot marches; administrative structure and role of the Rover Scout Crew; various knots; as well as making plans and camp preparations.

The one-day basic camp training gave scout members knowledge about the importance of teamwork and how to set up a tent; map and compass reading skills; crafting and survival skills including how to start a fire using wood and bake bread as well as cook rice in a drink box and bake eggs using mud; how to use and care for sharp tools; knotting and lashing; building a pioneering project project in the form of an 18-foot-tall pyramid tower; cooking for a group; and doing community work.
