Unfit for habitation

Rokiah Mahmud

A workers’ residence in Kampong Menglait was deemed “not safe to live in”, after a recent inspection by Labour Department enforcement personnel. The department said the residence was also not in a manageable condition in terms of cleanliness.

The department said the employer was instructed to relocate the workers to meet the housing standards set by guidelines.

The department said the employer was found violating Chapter 80 of the Employment Order 2009 – failing to provide a clean, comfortable and safe residence and its surroundings as well as for not providing residences following the provisions of the law.

If found guilty, the employer will be slapped with a compound of BND600 for the first offence, and BND900 for the second.

The department reminded all employers to always monitor employees’ welfare in accordance to the Employment Order 2009.
