Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) made a winning start in the UBD Football Championship 2021 among higher learning institutions after a 2-1 victory over Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) in Group ‘B’ at Field ‘A’ of the UBD Sports Complex last Wednesday.

Abu Suffian bin Haji Adanan opened the scoring for UBD in the 31st minute with Zainul Muttaqin bin Salleh equalising just two minutes later.

However, Md Nur’wafiuddin bin Haji Osman ensured all three points for the tournament hosts with a 68th minute winner.

UBD will set their sights to register back-to-back wins when they entertain Jalan Tungku Link neighbours Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) next Tuesday.

Meanwhile in Group ‘A’, Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB) stood alone at the summit after a 1-0 victory over Politeknik Brunei (PB) last Tuesday.

Awangku Muhd Afiq bin Pengiran Haji Suhaili’s solitary strike in the 45th minute proved decisive for the religious learning institution to give them an outright lead in the table.

PB stay second and three points adrift from the lead despite the defeat with Cosmopolitan College of Commerce and Technology, Institute of Brunei Technical Education, and Micronet International College also in the mix.

The competition continues tomorrow with Kolej International Graduate Studies (KIGS) taking on Laksamana College of Business (LCB) in Group ‘B’.

The Batu Satu-based outfit will look for a second successive win after the highs of winning against UTB in their opening match while their Kiulap-based opponents will enter the clash in search of a first victory.

Jointly organised by UBD’s Student Affairs Section and Students’ Association, 10 teams comprising local higher learning institutions are taking part.

The final is slated on July 31.
