UBD chairs Borneo Studies Network meeting

Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) held the 3rd Borneo Studies Network (BSN) Governing Council Meeting as the Chairman and Secretariat of the network.

The meeting was chaired by Vice-Chancellor of UBD Datin Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Aziz.

BSN was established in 2013 with 12 co-founding member institutions from Borneo. The aim of the consortium is to promote academic collaboration between member institutions and to enhance human capacity building through the joint research, as well as, student and staff mobility.

BSN has five Research Groups relevant to Borneo: Borneo Biodiversity, Borneo Cultural Heritage and Ethnic Groups, Borneo Renewable Energy and Advanced Material, Borneo Sustainable Community Transformation as well as Borneo Economy and Banking.

The first Borneo Young Researchers Workshop was held in UBD in 2014 that trained graduate students to cultivate research interest and nurture talent. The university also organised the first annual Borneo Youth Leadership Camp for undergraduates in 2018 to promote and support innovative thinking and leadership skills among the BSN students.

The 12 member institutions in BSN are: Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Universitas Balikpapan (UNIBA), Universitas Islam Kalimantan (UNISKA), Universitas Tanjungpura (UNTAN), Universitas Palangkaraya (UPR), STAKATN, Institute Mata Enggang, Universitas Lambung Mangkurat (ULM), Universitas Mulawarman (UNMUL) and Universitas Borneo Tarakan (UBT).
