TWO local men accused of committing armed robbery on a car passenger were charged in the Bandar Seri Begawan High Court yesterday.
Officer-in-charge of the Muara-Police Station Inspector Reynold @ Daniell Chin said that the crime was allegedly committed at around noon on June 15 in the vicinity of the Mentiri Golf Club Beach, where the suspects offered the victim a car lift to the capital for the payment of BND1.
During the drive, the suspects suddenly stopped and forced the victim to give up his money at knifepoint.
They obtained BND225, RM15 and USD3 from the victim, who was reportedly unhurt.
The suspects, Mohd Hasnawie bin Hasani, 29, and Awangku Mohd Redzuan bin Pengiran Haji Ismail, 28, were arrested by Police Special Duties personnel from the Muara, Berakas and Central Police Stations the next day.
During the indictment in court presided over by Magistrate Radin Safie bin Radin Mas Basiuni yesterday, both defendants were charged with two counts under Section 395 of the Penal Code Chapter 22 for Gang Robbery that carries a prison term of not more than 30 years and not more than 12 strokes of the cane.
They were also charged under Section 398 of the Penal Code Chapter 22 for Armed Gang Robbery that carries a prison term of not more than seven years and not more than 12 strokes of the cane.
Both suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Magistrate has set July 20 for the start of their trial.
The prosecution in the case was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Hajah Hafizah.
