A 68-YEAR-OLD local man was sentenced to six months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday after he pleaded guilty to theft.
Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Hajah ‘Adzimah Mukarramah binti Haji Salleh informed Magistrate Kamaliah Fadhilah binti Haji Ibrahim that Haji Mohammad bin Mumin went to a communal convenience store in Kampong Mentiri at 3.51pm on May 18, 2019.
He parked his car at the back and walked around to the front when he noticed the engine of a car was left running, doors not locked and saw a black backpack in the car.
He then saw the opportunity and took the bag and left in his own car to another convenience store in Kota Batu.
He stopped his car and looked through the contents of the backpack.
He took BND738 in cash from a wallet inside the bag and abandoned the rest at the site.
The victim realised that his backpack had gone missing when he went back to his car after buying a can of drink at the convenience store leading him to lodge a police report.
Police investigations found the defendant was caught in action on CCTV camera at the convenience store and this led to the defendant’s arrest.
Meanwhile, in another case, a 33-year-old local man was sentenced to 18 months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday after he pleaded guilty to a string of thefts.
Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Muhd Qamarul Affyian bin Abdul Rahman’s facts of the case revealed in court that Abdul Wafi bin Abdul Wahab stole a Samsung Note 2 from a house in Kampong Lambak Kanan ‘B’ between 11am and noon on November 13, 2018.
The defendant also stole a Gucci sling bag that contained make-up items and a Puma backpack with a wallet, identification card, ATM card, a Vivo phone and a Sim card from Hua Ho Manggis Complex on November 20, 2018 between 12.45pm to 5.15pm.
The owners of the two stolen bags work as sales promoters at the shopping complex and stored their bags nearby a staircase where they were reported stolen.
The defendant also stole a Matrix television, PS4 game console, a pair of Adidas trainers and a small radio from a house on Jalan Pasir Berakas between March 24 and 28, 2019.
Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid presided over the case.
