TWO companies were fined by authorities for disposing waste irresponsibly.
Mahamas Sdn Bhd in Kampong Sengkarai, Tutong District was issued with a compound fine of BND200 by the Enforcement Unit of the Tutong District Office recently for violation of Section 12 (1)(A) of the Minor Offences Act by leaving behind empty boxes in front of the shop’s premises.
Meanwhile in Kuala Belait, the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe) issued a fine of BND500 to Lilama South East Asia Sdn Bhd yesterday.
The company spilled foul liquid into public drainage at the surrounding area of the BFI construction site located at Sungai Liang – a violation of the Chapter 30, Section 12 (1) (c) of the Minor Offences Act.
The companies were given seven days to settle the fine.
Failure to do so would result in a further fine of BND1,000 or a month’s imprisonment for the first convicted offence.
For the subsequent offences, the penalty is a fine of BND3,000 and a prison term of up to three months.
The Enforcement Unit of the Tutong District Office and JASTRe urged members of the public, shop owners and companies to always be responsible in maintaining the cleanliness of the surrounding environment and dispose rubbish at designated places.
