Muhammad Amirul Haziq bin Haji Metussin, and Muhammad Faiz bin Arman were selected as candidates to compete in the 13th WorldSkills ASEAN Competition, slated to be held in Singapore next year.

The contest takes place from July 22 to 27 at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre where ASEAN youths will compete in 22 different professions and skills.

The two were chosen from a refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) Competition held by the Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) Sultan Bolkiah Campus (SBC) held yesterday.

Four students were challenged to instal an air-conditioning unit in an allocated space, and were judged by the quality and efficiency of their work by the campus instructors and industry experts.

Muhammad Amirul Haziq, who placed first overall, said his friends and fellow competitors had put on their best showing of the skills and knowledge that they had learnt in their course.

“While I do feel nervous about competing at the international level, I will continue to research and hone my skills ahead of the competition,” he added.

RAC programme leader Muhd Aalee Leevoi bin Abdullah Lee said this is the first time the institution is able to send candidates to compete on an international level after travel restrictions caused by the pandemic have been lifted.

Chief Executive Officer of IBTE Dr Haji Mohd Zamri bin Haji Sabli was the guest of honour.

Also present were representatives from AEC Sdn Bhd and Q-Carrier Brunei Sdn Bhd.
