Turkiye people will overcome disaster: LegCo Speaker

Legislative Council (LegCo) Speaker Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib expressed confidence that the people of Turkiye will be able to overcome the difficult situation following the earthquake disaster that struck the nation on February 6.

The LegCo Speaker said this during a courtesy call from Ambassador of Turkiye to Brunei Darussalam Professor Dr Hamit Ersoy at the Department of Councils of State building yesterday.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman expressed his sympathy and condolences, while the ambassador expressed his gratitude for the sympathy and prayers offered by Bruneians for the disaster victims.

Both sides also touched on issues of mutual concern. The envoy raised the desire to hold a visit for Members of Parliament between the two countries, which was welcomed by the  LegCo Speaker.

Brunei Darussalam and Turkiye enjoy close cooperation in various fields, especially in trade, tourism, education, culture, sports and security.

Secretary to the Cabinet Minister’s Council and Clerk to the LegCo Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Jaya Dato Paduka Haji Judin bin Haji Asar was also present.

Meanwhile, in a separate meeting with the High Commissioner of Canada to Brunei Darussalam Ambra Dickie, the LegCo Speaker congratulated her on her appointment as the new Canadian High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam. He expressed appreciation for close relations between the two countries, especially in education.

The two parties also discussed matters of mutual interest such as climate change, mental health and digitalisation.

The two sides also exchanged views on a number of matters related to the country’s development and hope that bilateral relations can be further strengthened through cooperation in various fields.

The LegCo Speaker also wished her success during her tenure in Brunei Darussalam.
