Troubled by meat shortages

A letter from A Consumer, “Saddened by local food importers’ struggles”, published on August 5 in the Bulletin’s Opinion Page was very interesting and definitely an eye opener for us new players in the food catering business.

I recently set up a restaurant in Berakas, featuring duck as the main selling dish.

It was so well-received that it got me considering opening another branch in Gadong.

Unfortunately, last month, my supplier informed me that they had run out of frozen duck.

Importation has been halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and they are not sure when they would be able to import frozen products again.

I’m not the only one facing this dilemma; other restaurateurs are affected by the shortages of frozen meat, especially those with lamb dishes on their menus. Lamb shoulders and legs can no longer be found at supermarkets.

We urge the authorities to be mindful of the issue faced by small and medium enterprises amid this health crisis. I believe that ease of doing business should be emphasised and normalised, and we desperately need the easing now.

We eagerly await a temporary solution that could tide us over until the day the world declares victory over COVID-19.
