PETALING JAYA (ANN/THE STAR) – As Tropical Storm Trami sweeps across Vietnam, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued an alert for severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and strong winds across the northern regions of Peninsular Malaysia.
In a statement released on Sunday, MetMalaysia warned that adverse weather conditions are expected until 4pm in several areas: Perlis, Kedah (including Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Kuala Muda, Sik, Baling, Kulim, and Bandar Baharu), Penang, and Perak (covering Kerian, Larut, Matang, Selama, Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar, and Kinta).
Meanwhile, Typhoon Trami has wrought devastation in the Philippines, claiming over 100 lives.
The nation now braces for a potential new cyclone and Trami’s possible return. The storm has affected more than 4.2 million people, with early estimates of damage to agriculture and infrastructure amounting to PHP291 million (approximately USD6.5 million).
Trami weakened to a tropical storm as it made landfall around 325km northeast of Da Nang, Vietnam, on Saturday.
