THE Magistrate’s Court recently handed a six-month jail sentence each to a trio after prosecutors proved an attempted theft case against them beyond the court’s reasonable doubt.
Nora Zuliana Asmawany binti Haji Asmad, 38, James anak Sugit, 42, and Leong Chin Fatt, 42, were convicted by Senior Magistrate Azrimah binti Haji Abdul Rahman for involvement in the attempt during which they were found by a worker and later caught by the police with several items in their possession.
The items were taken from the storehouse of a workshop in Kampong Serambangun, Tutong on November 22, 2016.
Items bagged by the defendants were car parts which included an alternator, 4WD car jack, fuel filter, fuel box set, rear light, coil, CD player, compressor, airbag cover, lamp, mirror, Engine Control Unit (ECU), fuel pump, speakers, control monitor, fog lamp and wrench tools that were valued at an estimated BND7,000.
In their defence throughout the trial, Nora Zuliana Asmawany said she was the driver and did not know what was going on.
James and Leong said that they were there to fish. Police evidence found no fishing equipment within the area.
The court disbelieved the defences and found that the prosecution’s case had satisfied the court.
DPP Dr Mohd Hussin Ali bin Idris prosecuted the case.
