Tree-planting marks commitment to environmental preservation

Some 260 saplings were planted during a tree-planting event organised by Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) recently.

BIBD Chief Marketing Officer Hajah Nurul Akmar binti Haji Mohd Jaafar said, “By actively contributing to the preservation of Brunei’s ecosystems, we are reaffirming our long-standing commitment to be a responsible corporate entity that prioritises the well-being of our environment and future generations.”

The event, held in collaboration with Green Brunei, saw volunteers from BIBD, Universiti Brunei Darussalam and Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali participate, with support from the Forestry Department, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism.

The event contributed to the ‘660 Roots to a Greener Future’ initiative under BIBD’s environmental project, Projek Alam Mampan. Launched in May with an inaugural planting of 40 trees at Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas, the initiative aims to plant 660 trees across Brunei by the end of the year.

The next phase will see trees planted in the Tutong, Belait, and Temburong districts.

The initiative aligns with BIBD’s sustainability framework, which reflects the bank’s commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen. The sustainability framework is designed to integrate environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles into the core of BIBD’s operations, ensuring that the bank contributes positively to Brunei’s long-term economic, social and environmental goals.

Projek Alam Mampan is one of the key initiatives under this framework, designed to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with the ‘660 Roots to a Greener Future’ project addressing Goal 15: Life on Land, focusing on protecting and restoring terrestrial ecosystems and promoting the sustainable use of natural resources.

In addition to the tree planting initiative, Projek Alam Mampan is set to expand its efforts to address marine and coastal ecosystems in line with Goal 14: Life below Water. A key upcoming initiative is BIBD’s reef ball programme, which offers a unique opportunity for the community to engage with marine ecosystems and contribute to important habitat conservation efforts. The bank is also planning mangrove restoration projects, demonstrating its commitment to protecting Brunei’s coastal ecosystems.
