AISHAH binti Hassan emerged the overall winner of the Nyirik Culinary Challenge held yesterday morning at the Dermaga Diraja in the capital.
The 64-year-old housewife won over the judges with her Kuih Pancit (Onde-Onde) and Kuih Koci during the one-hour cook-off.
Aishah said, “Alhamdulillah, this is my first ever competition and I managed to come in first. It was really unexpected.”
She added, “I have been making these traditional kuih for a long time. These recipes have been in my family for generations.”
Currently, Aishah also takes customer orders from her home in RPN Kampong Rimba.
Second place went to Dayangku Nurul Ani Hafizah for her Kuih Puteri Mandi, while Mohammad Amiruddin bin Haji Shahrin came in third with his own creation, Puteri Mandi Warna-Warni.
Prizes were presented by Nor Faridah binti Ahad, the spouse of Wardi bin Haji Mohammad Ali, the Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism.
The judging panel comprised Fadzilah binti Omar, a Pastry Chef at The Brunei Hotel; Pengiran Abdul Kahar, a Pastry Sous Chef at Royal Brunei Catering (RBC); and Chef Rezal Othman of The Rizqun International Hotel.
Organised by Eco Kampong and Eco Ponies Garden Lamunin Tutong with the joint cooperation of the The Brunei Hotel, Royal Brunei Catering and The Rizqun International Hotel, the Nyirik Culinary Challenge was among the main attractions of the Brunei December Festival 2017, with the primary objective of preserving and showcasing traditional culinary delights to the younger generation.
