Top downloads on PlayStation for September

The top downloads for the month of September on PlayStation (PS) 5, PS4 and PS virtual reality (VR) in the United States (US)/Canada region were recently unveiled on the PlayStation Blog. Here’s a look at the top 10 most downloaded games on those platforms for September 2022.

PLAYSTATION 5

On the PS5, NBA 2K23 led the way, with the latest release in 2K’s long-running series of basketball simulation games taking top spot on the downloads chart, while the newest entry in another long-running sports series, EA Sports’ football simulation title FIFA 23, was second.

Fellow EA Sports title, Madden NFL 23, touched down at fourth sport, behind third-placed The Last of Us Part 1, a remake of the award-winning action-adventure game The Last of Us which first released back in 2013.

Cyberpunk 2077 occupied the fifth place on the chart with its open-world action role-playing gameplay set in Night City, a megalopolis obsessed with power, glamour and body modification, while fellow open-world title Grand Theft Auto V was sixth, showing that it remains ever popular on the PS5, nine years after its initial release back on the PS3.

Disney Dreamlight Valley, a life simulation adventure game featuring various Disney characters was seventh on the chart, followed by eighth-placed action-adventure game Saints Row, the fifth instalment and a reboot of the series of the same name, while tactical first-person shooter Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege was ninth and fighting game JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All Star battle was 10th.

PLAYSTATION 4

The September download chart for PS4 saw a similar story play out, with NBA 2K23 and FIFA 23 taking first and second places on the chart respectively, while Madden NFL 23 completed the top three.

Grand Theft Auto V’s enduring popularity on the PS4 saw it take fourth spot on the list, followed by open world sandbox game Minecraft in fifth.

The sixth most downloaded title on PS4 last month was Red Dead Redemption 2, an open world action-adventure set in a fictionalised version of America in 1899 and described as “an epic tale of honour and loyalty at the dawn of the modern age”.

In addition to being placed on the PS5 chart, Cyberpunk 2077 also occupied seventh place on PS4, while Dead Island: Definitive Edition, a remaster of the 2011 action role-playing game set in the midst of a zombie outbreak on a tropical island, was eighth.

Mixed martial arts fighting game EA Sports UFC 4 was ninth on the list, while survival horror title The Forest took the last spot of the top 10.

PLAYSTATION VR

On PS VR platform, the most downloaded game in September was Beat Saber, a rhythm game in which players use virtual sabers to slice blocks that represent musical beats.

Second on the chart was Job Simulator, a game set in the year 2050, in a world where robots have replaced all human jobs and in which “players can relive the glory days of work by simulating the ins and outs of being a gourmet chef, an office worker, a convenience store clerk, and more”.

Superhot VR, a first person shooter where time moves only when the player moves, was third, while VR platform game Astro Bot Rescue Mission was fourth, followed by boxing title Creed: Rise to Glory in fifth.

Sixth on the list was adventure game Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality, with seventh place going to NFL ProERA ’22, a VR simulation game where players experience what it’s like to compete as the quarterback of their favourite NFL team.

Story-driven, physics-based medieval combat game Swordsman VR was eighth, ahead of ninth-placed Sniper Elite VR, a stealth-action first-person shooter set during World War 2, while arcade-style first-person shooter title Transformers Beyond Reality rounded up the top 10.

FREE-TO-PLAY (PS5 & PS4)

Also revealed were the top 10 free-to-play titles on PS5 and PS4, with the ever popular battle-royale title Fortnite taking the top spot.

Second place went to Fall Guys, a game where players compete with hordes of other contestants online through rounds of obstacles and challenges until a single victor remains, while crossover fighting game MultiVersus was also in the top three.

Battle royale titles continue to dominate the list, with Rumbleverse, a brawler battle royale game focussed on melee combat, garnering fourth place, followed by first-person shooter battle royale game Call of Duty: Warzone in fifth and battle royale-hero shooter title Apex Legends in sixth.

The free-to-play chart continues with online action role-playing game Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis taking seventh spot and vehicular football game Rocket League in eighth.

First-person shooter title Destiny 2 takes the ninth spot on the list, followed by football simulation title eFootball 2023 in 10th.
