The Magistrate’s Court yesterday ordered three Indonesian men to settle fines totalling BND250,000 for keeping smuggled cigarettes at their residences.
Saiful Bahri, 31, was ordered to settle a fine of BND126,000, or serve 20 months’ jail in default of payment after he pleaded guilty to owning 158 cartons and 19 packets of smuggled cigarettes.
Masuddin, 36, was ordered to settle a BND40,400 fine, or serve 14 months’ jail following a guilty plea for keeping 50 cartons and 18 packets of smuggled cigarettes, along with BND3,000 cash proceeds from illicit sales of the contraband.
The court ordered Riman, 38, to settle BND8,760 in fines or serve eight months’ jail on failure to make payment. He pleaded guilty to keeping 11 cartons and two packets of smuggled cigarettes.
Magistrate Nur Eleana binti Dato Seri Paduka Haji Hairol Arni ordered the cigarettes destroyed and the cash forfeited to the state.
