A hotel room service attendant was sentenced to jail for a year by the Magistrate’s Court on Saturday after he pleaded guilty to stealing from a guest’s room.

Izzuddin Fitri bin Idrus was also ordered to compensate BND83 to a buyer of the stolen watch he sold it off to.

Izzuddin would have to serve an additional month’s jail in default of the compensation. Prosecutor Ahmad Firdaus bin Mohammad revealed that Izzuddin, 33, was told to clean the room of a hotel guest at 11am on January 23.

He pressed the bell three times and after not receiving a response, the defendant used a masterkey to open the door and entered, Magistrate Harnita Zelda Skinner heard.

He cleaned a room service trolley and noticed a luxury watch on a table in the room which he stole. On February 2, the defendant sold the watch to a buyer on social media for BND1,200.

He spent BND83 for fuel and food.

The same day the watch owner came across his watch bearing the same serial number being sold off on the social media platform.

The owner filed a police report leading to finding out the defendant and his arrest.

Police recovered the BND2,500 worth luxury watch.
