    Thailand beckons competition winners

    Team PoliGen35 from Politeknik Brunei (PB) emerged as winners of the National Finals of the ASEAN Data Science Explorers (ADSE) Competition 2019 for Brunei Darussalam, earning a cash prize of USD800 and the opportunity to represent Brunei to compete in the regional finals in Bangkok, Thailand from October 8-10.

    The competition, which was participated by team PoliGen35, teams Zeus and Zeal from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD); and teams BruNASH2035 and Subtle Sustainability from Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), was held at UTB yesterday.

    Team BruNASH2035 from UTB finished in second place and received USD400, followed by team Zeal in third place receiving USD200.

    Acting Vice-Chancellor of UTB Haji Ady Syarmin bin Haji Md Taib was the guest of honour.

    Senior Project Officer for ASEAN Foundation Systems, Applications and Products in Data Processing (SAP) Joint Initiatives Ilan Asqolani and Vice President of Value Engineering from SAP Southeast Asia Avinash Jalan were also present. During the competition, the teams were each given 10 minutes of presentation time followed by a question and answer session.

    The teams were evaluated by a panel of judges including Head of International Affairs at the Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry (MEMI) Hajah Siti Hasfah binti Haji Abdul Hamid; Assistant Director of Youth Against Poverty Zulkarnain Juata; Conservation Programme Manager, Sustainable Development and Environment Protection Nazurah binti Mohd Noor; and Avinash Jalan.

    UTB, through the School of Computing and Informatics (SCI), is the university partner for the ADSE Competition 2019, jointly organised by SAP and ASEAN Foundation. This marks the second year the competition is being held in the country.

    The ADSE competition was a data analytics competition that aims to enhance awareness and appreciation of the ASEAN community among ASEAN youth.

    Themed ‘Today’s Youth for Tomorrow’s World’, the competition enabled ASEAN youth to play a key role in tackling today’s social issues facing the region and help create positive change for a better future.
