Technology of past to the fore

James Kon

A total of 115 participants sat in for an online talk discussing steam boilers in Brunei Darussalam, presented by Bong Poh Yuk, a retiree who has been with the oil and gas industry for 40 years.

The talk was the second series organised by the Museums Department under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

Bong, who is actively documenting and photographing Seria’s oilfield and wildlife, held the talk as a means of giving back to the community.

The talk described the function of steam boilers, used in the early 1900s up to 1940s, and their importance to the oil and gas industry.

Bong highlighted that 10 Belait wells used steam boilers as a source of power more than a century ago.

With the availability of other forms of drilling, steam boilers have been long forgotten.

However, the impact it had and the remnants displayed at the Malay Technology Museum provide the public an insight into how steam boilers were used to power an engine.
