Take caution of active weather condition, BDMD urges

Lyna Mohamad

Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD) of the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications advised the public to take precautionary action following the forecasted active weather condition as there is the risk of flash floods, especially at low-lying and flood prone areas as well as near river banks during heavy rain and high tide.

Landslides and falling trees are also possible during heavy showers and gusty conditions, hence the public, road users and fishermen are advised to stay up to date with the latest weather forecasts, advisories and warnings issued by the BDMD and to take action to ensure safety.

In the latest weather forecast issued by the department on the general situation, the country is currently towards the end of the Southwest Monsoon period where there is fair weather in the morning, and showers in the afternoon and at night as well as occasional squally showers.

Meanwhile, as of 5.45am yesterday, Typhoon Hinnamnor was observed over East China Sea, approximately 2,935 kilometres (km) from the Sultanate.

It is forecast to move northeastwards, away from the country. The typhoon will influence Brunei’s weather indirectly.

However, the development of a low pressure system near the country will result in unstable and moist atmospheric conditions favourable for the development of rain clouds.

Active weather conditions are expected from September 8 to 11 and occasional showers or thundershowers are expected especially in the afternoon and may persist through the night.

Rainy condition may last until early morning where showers can be heavy and gusty at times, with wind speed up to 40 kilometres per hour.

Over Brunei waters, the sea state is generally slight at 0.6 metres to moderate at 1.2 metres.

BDMD will continue to monitor the weather conditions and issue weather advisories or warnings if necessary.
