Brunei Darussalam celebrates Hari Raya Aidilfitri today as the hilal or new moon for Syawal 1441 Hijrah was sighted at vantage points set up yesterday evening.

The announcement was made last night with the consent of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, following reports from officials.

The moon-sighting announcement, verified by Chief Syar’ie Judge Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Salim bin Haji Besar, was broadcast on Radio Television Brunei (RTB).

The moon-sighting events for Syawal 1441 Hijrah were witnessed by Syar’ie judges, officials from the State Judiciary Department and State Mufti’s Office of the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Survey Department of the Ministry of Development.

The moon-sighting at the DST Tower in Jerudong was attended by Minister of Development Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar, as well as senior government officials. Similar moon-sighting events were held at Bukit Agok in the Brunei-Muara District, Bukit Ambog in the Tutong District and Bukit Lumut in the Belait District.

The country will enjoy a three-day public holiday and unlike previous years, Brunei and the rest of the world will celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri in different circumstances as the threat of COVID-19 still looms.

The Sunnat Hari Raya Aidilfitri prayers, usually held on the morning of the first day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri at mosques, will be carried out at homes as mosques, prayer halls and suraus are closed until May 29.

The Ministry of Health issued Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration guidelines recently, only permitting the public to visit immediate family members.

The guideline also stated that mass gatherings should be limited to 20-30 people only.⁣ Open houses/offices are also not allowed.⁣
