Surprise visit to nab errant employers

Officials of the Employees Trust Fund (TAP), through its Enforcement Unit, continued its series of surprise visits to business premises around the capital to ensure employers have registered their local employees and contribute to the TAP and Supplemental Contributory Pension (SCP) schemes.

From the visit to 54 premises, TAP inspectors found two employers and 18 local employees not yet registered to the TAP and SCP schemes. Employers who failed to present necessary documents during the visit have been instructed to be present at the TAP office for further action.

TAP reminded employers their responsibility to register and contribute for their employees eligible for the schemes.

It is mandatory for employees who are citizens and permanent residents of Brunei Darussalam to be registered and contributing to the TAP and SCP schemes, including part-time workers, contract workers, daily-paid workers and workers on probation.

Under Section 26 of the Employee Trust Act (Chapter 167), if found guilty, an employer will be fined not more than BND3,000 for the first offence and not more than BND10,000 for the second and subsequent offences.
