Brunei has reached an electrification range of about 99.9 per cent, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Defence II Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof said during the 19th Legislative Council session yesterday.

The minister added that the Department of Electrical Services will continue to implement efforts to achieve 100-per-cent coverage of the Sultanate’s electricity supply, with focus on the interior areas in Belait and Tutong districts, while the Temburong District is expected to be directly connected to the national network in the first quarter of next year.

It was also shared that in ensuring that the country’s energy supply is sustainable and produces low carbon energy, the Department of Energy will continue to focus on energy transition efforts which include the use of national solar energy on a large scale by increasing the installation of solar energy by 200 megawatts by 2025 through the implementation and strategies of SURIA-200.

“In the long term, we will also explore the production of other renewable energy sources such as hydrogen, as well as carbon capture technology such as carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS),” said the minister.
