His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, received in audience Chairman of the Zhejiang Hengyi Group and Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd Qiu Jianlin at Istana Nurul Iman yesterday.
At the audience ceremony, His Majesty and the Zhejiang Hengyi Group and Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd Chairman touched on matters related to the development of the Pulau Muara Besar Oil Refinery and Petrochemical Plant, as well as its contribution to the national economy and generation of business and employment opportunities for locals.
Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd is a joint venture between the Government of His Majesty through its Strategic Development Capital Fund, and the Zhejiang Hengyi Group from the People’s Republic of China. With an investment of USD3.445 billion, the project is the largest foreign direct investment in Brunei Darussalam.
Hengyi Industries commenced construction of its refinery plant in 2017 and began production in November 2019. Through its mega-scale production of petrochemicals, Hengyi Industries strives to contribute to Brunei Darussalam’s long-term economic growth and social development, consequently setting a solid foundation for achieving Brunei Vision 2035.
To date, Hengyi Industries has created job opportunities for some 666 locals, and business opportunities for 59 local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in engineering, catering, transportation and logistics.
In addition, Hengyi Industries has offered 203 scholarships to Bruneians to further their studies overseas since 2014, 68 of whom have graduated and are currently working for Hengyi Industries.
In a separate ceremony yesterday, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office as Chairman of the Brunei Shell Joint Venture Companies received in audience Qiu Jianlin at Qashr Al-Meezaan.
His Royal Highness and Qiu Jianlin exchanged views on key business activities in the downstream energy sector and the development of Bruneian talent.
Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, Minister of Energy Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mat Suny bin Haji Mohd Hussein, Deputy Minister of Energy Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Matsatejo bin Sokiaw and Chief Executive Officer of Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd Chen Lian Cai were also present at both ceremonies.
