A group of six students from Hong Kong who are part of the exchange programme under the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), were thrilled to be able to experience the get-together in Brunei Muara District with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday morning.

The students were Julianne Chin, Astor le, Kira Cheung, Trix Zhang, Alice Leung and Evian li.

In an interview with the Bulletin, Julianne said, “We are looking forward to meeting and greeting His Majesty today. We are very happy to be here in a grand ceremony today, especially since we have been away from huge gatherings of people for two years because of COVID-19.”

Trix added, “We are no longer required to wear masks in public places. Brunei has done well in stopping the spread of the outbreak.”

For the students, the exchange programme has allowed them to experience the warmth and kindness of Bruneian people.

Meanwhile, 20 students from Mentiri Primary School were among hundreds of students participating in flag waving along the road to welcome the arrival of His Majesty and members of the royal family.

According to headmistress Sarimah binti Haji Lusin, “the group arrived around 7am. This is our first time joining the celebration. We are glad to be here with the students and excited to meet His Majesty”.

She also conveyed her birthday wishes to His Majesty: “We would like to wish His Majesty a long, happy and healthy life and continued progress and prosperity of the people of Brunei Darussalam.”
