Seventeen students out of the 115 youngest Jerudong International School (JIS) senior students in Year 7 and Year 8 volunteered to participate in the annual UKMT Junior Maths Challenge last April received gold certificates.

Following the success, Justin Foo and Richard Zou, qualified for the Junior Olympiad, while Vivi He, Lucas Yoo, and Zachary Keasberry were also invited to participate in the Junior Olympiad following their achievements in the challenge.
This year, 17 students have been invited to participate in the JIS in-house competition called the Junior Kangaroo.
The Junior Math Challenge is aimed at Years 7 and 8 students (ages 11–13).
The challenge involves answering 25 multiple-choice questions in one hour without a calculator.
The questions aim to test students’ mathematical dexterity – their ability to apply the mathematics they’ve learnt in unusual and creative ways.
One of the main aims of the Math Faculty at JIS is to develop resilient problem solvers.
The competitions have grown in popularity over the the years, and JIS hopes its students continue to enjoy challenging themselves with these types of problems and puzzles in the years to come.
“I am immensely proud of our students’ outstanding performance in the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge. Their achievements reflect their dedication, hard work, and the excellent support provided by our Math Faculty and their parents,” said JIS Principal Nicholas Sheehan.
“By participating in such competitions, our students are developing the valuable skills of problem-solving and critical thinking.
“We encourage them to continue embracing challenges and pursuing their passion for mathematics,” the Principal added.
