Stepdad lands behind bars for outrage of modesty

The Intermediate Court yesterday sentenced a 51-year-old local man to four years’ imprisonment following the conclusion of a trial on charges of outraging the modesty of his stepdaughter and sexual assault on a minor.

Judge Pengiran Masni binti Pengiran Haji Bahar convicted the defendant on finding the prosecution to have proven the case beyond the court’s reasonable doubt.

The defendant fondled his 15-year-old stepdaughter in 2017, and inappropriately touched another stepdaughter, aged 11, in 2019.

The court gave thought to the circumstances of the case and found it to be more aggravated with his lack of remorse as he maintained his innocence up until giving mitigations, his denial to the charges and his breach of trust as a stepfather.

The defendant would have received whipping if not for his age. However, the court did not deem the defendant entitled to a minimum jail sentence when arriving at the decision.

DPP Raihan Nabilah binti Haji Ahmad Ghazali prosecuted the case.
