Steered by Brunei values

James Kon

Schools and educators nationwide are being reminded to ensure Brunei values are embedded in students as a guaranteed means to maintain harmony and unity.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam made this call in a titah delivered during Chung Hwa Middle School Bandar Seri Begawan’s (CHMS BSB) 100th year anniversary celebration yesterday.

“The government, through the Ministry of Education (MoE) and Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA), will continue to lend support towards professional development programmes, in tandem with the curriculum implementation needs of the education system. This will ensure equal and inclusive education for all.

“As we understand, the educational landscape has been altered by various challenges, especially over the last few years during the COVID-19 outbreak,” His Majesty said.

His Majesty added, “The pandemic brought with it a reduction in face-to-face learning and teaching, causing learning loss among students particularly those at the primary and secondary levels. I hope that private education institutions will pay serious attention to this issue and be responsible in ensuring learning recovery can be implemented with success.”

Meanwhile, in acknowledging the centennial celebration, His Majesty said, “2022 is a historic year for CHMS BSB. A hundred years is not a short time, it is long enough to enable growth and achieve excellence. Therefore it is necessary for us to extend words of congratulation to the establishment for such an achievement.”

“Additionally, this achievement holds proof that education ranks high on the national agenda, with concerted efforts also being made by the Chinese community,” the monarch said.
