ST ANDREW’S School was crowned champion of the inaugural Explorace Competition 2018, a literacy and numeracy competition for Year 4 students across the country with the runner-up spot going to Sultan Hassan Bangar Primary School.

Third place jointly went to Pintu Malim Primary School and Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Primary School.

Presenting the prizes to the top three winners was Education Officer and Head of the Theory Unit Hajah Hajidah binti Haji Abdul Wahab.

Consolation prizes were presented by Education Officer and Head of the Co-Curriculum Education Department in Temburong District M Zaimah binti Mohd Said.

Organised by the Theory Unit of the Co-Curriculum Education Department at the Ministry of Education (MoE), the Explorace Competition 2018 tested the intermediate abilities of Year 4 students through literacy and numeracy activities.

Some 88 students from 22 primary schools participated in the competition’s preliminary rounds of written tests last month, where they were required to answer questions on the Malay and English Language subjects as well as science and mathematics.

Eight schools with the best scores were shortlisted and divided into two groups, with only two of the best schools from each group advancing to the semi-finals on Friday.

The final round of the competition was held at the Auditorium of the Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (MSPSBS) on Saturday.

According to the Co-Curriculum Education Department, the competition was aimed at strengthening literacy and numeracy among primary school students and to build their confidence through the activities, while also encouraging collaboration and teamwork as well as instilling healthy competition among the participants.
