    Squashing yet more litterbugs

    An individual was slapped with a BND500 fine after they were discovered littering in a public area by the Kuala Belait and Seria Municipal Board on Saturday.

    Enforcement personnel from the municipal board discovered the individual disposing used construction materials on a public premise and issued a fine under Section 12(1), Chapter 30 of the Miscellaneous Offences Act.

    The individual was given seven days to settle the fine, and failure to do so will result in the case being brought to court.

    If found guilty, a further fine of no less than BND1,000 and no more than BND3,000 will be issued. Subsequent offences will result in a fine of no less than BND3,000 and no more than BND9,000 or imprisonment of no less than six months.

    Agencies and companies found guilty under the Act can also face similar fines of no less than BND2,000 and no more than BND10,000. Subsequent offences will see a fine of no less than BND10,000 and no more than BND30,000 or imprisonment of no less than 12 months.

    The municipal board reminded the public and business owners to ensure the cleanliness of the surrounding environment.
