Leaders and members of the Belait District Scout Association (PPDB) as well as the Belait Baden Powell (BP) Guild conducted their annual cleaning campaign at the Scout Forest Reserve in Kampong Sungai Mau yesterday.
Belait District Assistant District Commissioner (ADC) of Environment and Community Juin bin Antin and BP Guild committee Chairman Beelie bin Tengah were welcomed by the campaign’s organising Chairman Johnny Yap.
Yap said the campaign was held in conjunction with World Environment Day observed annually on June 5.
“This area (the Scout Forest Reserve at Kampong Sungai Mau) has been under the care of the PPDB for around 15 years, and ever since then, we have been making full use of the area, from the planting of saplings which have since grown into adult trees to camping trips for junior and cub scouts as they learn the basics of being a scout.”
He added that with World Environment Day being a month-long celebration, the association will continue to conduct similar campaigns with another held today at the Sungai Liang Beachfront as well as at the residences of scout members unable to attend the event.
“We are also planning to engage with schools and education institutes to encourage the cleaning and caring of our environment, with games such as the Earth Day Bingo to provide guidelines for students while making it fun and engaging,” he said.
Certificates of participation were handed to scout leaders and members as well as the distribution of the packages for the beach and home cleaning campaign to representatives who will hand them to schools and education institutes across the Belait District.
