Year 9 to Year 11 Biology students recently attended a marine conservation talk at the Sports School as part of a school-based committee professional development for biology teachers.

Organised by the Sports School Scouts troop, the talk was facilitated by Reef Check Brunei (RCB).

The talk was also part of the Sports School Scouts troop’s ongoing ‘Messengers of Peace’ initiative to raise awareness on marine conservation.

Deputy Principal of Sports School Hajah Noor Aisah binti Haji Salleh was present.

The talk highlighted the importance of conserving Brunei reefs as well as reducing pollution by single use plastics and dangers of ghost nets.

RCB members – Janice How, Wendy Han and Leonora Luah – discussed three of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals: clean water and sanitation; life below water; and partnership for goals.

Biology students as well as teachers participated in various quizzes and activities following the talk such as ghost net challenge, signing pledges of commitment to reduce usage of single-use plastics, conserve energy, save water and conserve coral reefs of Brunei.

RCB is a non-governmental organisation committed to the preservation and care of Brunei coral reefs with its ongoing ‘Dive against Debris’ project to remove ghost nets and rubbish from Brunei coral reefs.
