Spotlight on medication safety

Unsafe medication practices and medication errors are a leading cause of injury and avoidable harm in healthcare systems across the world. Given that medication error is one of the primary causes of preventable deaths, a better point of view is needed to prevent mortality and morbidity.

This was said by Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar, Chairman and Executive Director of Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) and Deputy Chairman of Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre (PJSC) during an event marking World Patient Safety Day, World Quality Week and World Pharmacists Day at PJSC building in Jerudong yesterday.

Healthcare workers were urged to adopt a proactive approach to ensure medication safety rather than waiting for a mistake to occur or a patient injury to occur. Given the complexity of the healthcare system, it is imperative that all healthcare professionals, notably doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other clinical support staff were advised to work together to find gaps in the healthcare system and encourage better use of medications.

The event, organised by JPMC and PJSC, saw opening remarks by JPMC Quality Assurance Manager Jeffry Damit on JPMC and PJSC’s quality and patient safety throughout the years.

Executive Director of PJSC Dr Haji Mazrul Adimin bin Haji Awang Besar along with senior management of JPMC and PJSC were also present.

The theme of this year’s World Patient Safety Day 2022 is ‘Medication Safety’ with the slogan ‘Medication Without Harm’.
