Spotlight falls on seafarer careers

The Brunei Maritime Academy (BMA) of Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) Jefri Bolkiah Campus (JBC) conducted the Seafarer Career Awareness Day at the multi-purpose hall yesterday.

The event aimed at promoting training and career opportunities in the marine field in collaboration with the Manpower Industry Steering Committee (MISC) Marine.Booths at the venue included the campus’ BMA, Belait Shipping Sdn Bhd, Brunei Gas Carrier Sdn Bhd, DBX Ship Management Sdn Bhd, Manpower Planning and Employment Council (MPEC), Megamas Training Company Sdn Bhd, Petro Laut Sdn Bhd, PTAS Sdn Bhd, and Posh Darussalam Sdn Bhd.

Former students as well as deck officers from Brunei Gas Carrier Sdn Bhd also shared their experience working in the maritime industry through a display showcasing ‘Life at Sea’ and sharing sessions.

Co-lead of MISC Marine Shamsul bin Othman noted how the variety of shipping and maritime affiliated work are an important asset to the nation not only as a form of transportation, but also as a major revenue stream for the nation’s economy. “This is why it is imperative for our industry to continually develop strategies that ensure safety and sustainability – not only for the raw materials being transported, but also for one of the most important asset in the trade, the seafarers,” he said.

The event continued with the launching of the Seafarer Career Awareness Day by Head of BMA Mohammad Iskandar bin Haji Jani, before concluding with a tour of the booths.
