“Accountancy as a profession offers exciting, rewarding and meaningful career with great opportunities for growth, as it serves the world of business. The world of business is becoming increasingly complex. Therefore, it is critical that we build on talent,” said Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah.
He made the comments at the launch of the Study in Professional Institution (SPIN) in Accountancy Programme at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) building yesterday.
The minister, who is also Chairman of the Manpower Planning and Employment Council (MPEC), said, “With the consent of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the SPIN in Accountancy Programme is introduced to develop and enhance the talent pool in this sector.
“The programme aims to provide our locals with opportunities to further develop their potential, regardless of their starting points, to pursue a rewarding career, in line with the MPEC’s vision.”
The minister added, “According to the Future Careers in Accountancy Report by the ACCA in 2020, there are five key roles that accountants in the future must adopt.
“First, as the assurance advocate. Accountants in the future are leads in bringing organisations to a new level of trust and integrity.”
“Second, as business transformers who could be driving major business change initiatives such as transforming finance operations.
“Third, as the data navigator who sees extraordinary opportunities in data and use emerging tech analytical tools to provide insights on business performance, which support key decision making. This is at the heart of a sustainable and dynamic organisation.
“Fourth, as the digital playmaker. They understand that in tomorrow’s global economy, implementation of digital transformation is key for any organisation to succeed.
“And lastly, as the sustainability trailblazer. They play key roles in establishing frameworks and activities that capture and drive value. They understand that aligning the pursuit of profit with the pursuit of purpose is integral to building sustainable future businesses,” said the minister.
Head of the MPEC Secretariat Marzalenie binti Haji Omar said, “It is our aspiration that this programme will be able to contribute to the increase in percentage of our highly skilled local labour force, which currently stands at 45.8 per cent against a target of 40 per cent.
Meanwhile, the launch saw Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew presenting award letters to 58 participants who have been selected to be the first batch of the programme.
Twenty-five mentors received certificates of appreciation for their commitment in providing guidance and mentorship to the participants throughout the course.
The event also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between MPEC and Brunei Darussalam Institute of Certified Public Accountants (BICPA), both represented by MPEC Secretariat Acting Deputy Director Pengiran Hajah Nurul Ihsan binti Pengiran Haji Damit and BICPA President Dayangku Hajah Siti Khadijah binti Pengiran Haji Moksin, witnessed by Public Accountants Oversight Committee (PAOC) Chairperson Hajah Chairani binti Haji Sulaiman and BICPA Vice President Kong Ee Pin.
Members of the MPEC working committee – Acting Minister of Education Datin Seri Paduka Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh, Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy (Economy) Dato Seri Paduka Dr Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin, and Deputy Minister of Development Dato Seri Paduka Ar Haji Marzuke bin Haji Mohsin – also attended.
The SPIN in Accountancy Programme under the MPEC was developed with support from the Ministry of Finance and Economy (MoFE), together with BICPA.
The programme will provide funding assistance to jobseekers and employees, including i-Ready apprentices in the private sector to acquire professional certifications in either Foundation in Accounting (FIA), Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
The first batch of ACCA under this programme will commence in August, while the FIA and CAT courses will start in January 2022. “
