Special lecture highlights spiritual healing approach to mental health treatment

State Mufti Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned highlighted a groundbreaking approach to mental health treatment that merges traditional psychiatric methods with spiritual healing during the opening ceremony of the Knowledge Convention 2024.

Touching on the convention’s theme ‘Addressing Mental Symptoms’, the state mufti emphasised that while psychiatric and psychological treatments have been pivotal in managing mental illness, there is a growing need to explore complementary methods.

He underscored that the root of mental illness often lies within the heart, which he described as the primary determinant of mental health.

“The state of the heart is crucial in influencing behaviour,” the state mufti said.

“A healthy heart reflects positive behaviour, while a troubled heart manifests negative behaviour.

“Therefore, mental symptoms can be likened to a sick heart needing treatment.”

While traditional treatments such as therapies and medications have their place, the state mufti said they often overlook the spiritual dimension.

He pointed out that these methods typically do not incorporate divine guidance or refer to Al Quran, the ultimate source of spiritual healing.

“Al-Quran offers a profound connection to mental health,” the state mufti said.

“When the heart is turbulent or unsettled, Al-Quran provides solace through zikir (remembrance of Allah the Almighty). The divine remembrance can bring peace to a troubled heart, serving as a vital component of treatment,” he added.

The state mufti proposed integrating the verses of Al-Quran into mental health treatment protocols. He suggested that incorporating this spiritual dimension alongside conventional methods could create a unique model of care – combining earthly treatments with heavenly guidance.

“This dual approach – psychiatry and psychology paired with divine treatment from Al-Quran – could set us apart as pioneers in the field,” he said. “By mobilising efforts between relevant ministries and religious bodies, we can explore how to incorporate Al-Quran teachings into mental health treatments effectively.”

The state mufti called for serious consideration and collaboration to make this integrated treatment approach a reality.

He expressed confidence that, with Allah the Almighty’s will, the initiative could lead to a new paradigm in mental healthcare, blending scientific and spiritual healing methods for comprehensive well-being. – Rokiah Mahmud
