THE role and function of the mosque in a Muslim community was highlighted yesterday by Syariah Appeal Court Judge Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Setia Raja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Suhaili bin Haji Mohiddin, in a special Friday sermon at the new Ar-Rahman Mosque in Kampong Tanjung Bunut.

The sermon was delivered during the first congregational Friday prayer at the new mosque, which was officially opened by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

“During the time of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), the mosque had two main purposes.”

“First, it serves as a religious centre for performing prayers, reciting Al-Quran, performing Tedarus, the collection of Zakat and so on,” said the Syariah Appeal Court Judge in his sermon.

“Secondly, the mosque serves as a centre of learning; as a place for administering civil justice; where soldiers assembled before departing for the battlefront; as a headquarters for the planning or coordination of military strategies; and as a place for making announcements and conveying messages to the community.”

The sermon also touched on the various ways of obtaining blessings through charitable acts such as donations, hibah (giveaways) and Waqaf (personal endowment).

“A Waqaf is an item that is derived from the surplus of one’s personal wealth or assets, and donated for the benefit of all in the name of Islam, as well as for receiving blessings from Allah the Almighty.

“As long as the Waqaf is still being used for the benefit of others, the blessings will continue, even though the donor is already deceased.

“Certainly, to build a mosque requires large funding. But we, as the people and residents of this country are thankful that His Majesty consented to the establishment of the Brunei Darussalam Mosque Construction Fund during the National Al-Quran Competition for Adults 1436 Hijrah.

“His Majesty’s titah had stated: ‘One of the messages gathered from the teachings of Al-Quran and Al-Hadith is building a mosque as a place of worship for Muslims.

“The act of building a mosque brings huge blessings.

“The Fund will become a platform for Muslims to contribute towards the construction of mosques, and a great opportunity for them to invest in the afterlife.

“The qualities of this particular investment are exceptional and cannot be comprehended by the mind. As stated by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in a hadith: ‘Whoever builds a mosque for Allah the Almighty, though it be small as a bird’s nest, Allah the Almighty will build for them a house in heaven’.

“This was the promise given by Allah the Almighty towards those who build mosques. Insya Allah, the establishment of the fund will enable Muslims in this country to obtain from that promise.

“In accordance with His Majesty’s titah, the collected funds will be directed towards building of new mosque and for the improvement of existing ones.”

The Syariah Appeal Court Judge also said that the Brunei Darussalam Mosque Construction Fund has already produced encouraging results during its three years, due to the active involvement of civil employees and members of the public.

“Thus, as citizens and residents of this country, we are thankful for this new mosque that was built with funding from the Brunei Darussalam Mosque Construction Fund, as a testament to the glory of Islam in Brunei Darussalam,” he said, concluding the sermon.
