South Korea’s food delivery industry up USD5.9B

ANN/THE KOREA HERALD – South Korea’s food delivery market continued its upward trend this year, with fast-food deliveries leading the charge, according to a report yesterday by a local data analytics firm.

Finda reported that the sector’s total value climbed to KRW7.87 trillion (USD5.9 billion) in the first half of the year, representing a 6.55 per cent rise compared to the same period last year.

Fast-food deliveries experienced the strongest growth, surging 22.72 per cent to reach KRW1.72 trillion, up from KRW1.4 trillion.

Fast food accounted for 36 per cent of all food delivery sales, trailing behind chicken and dakgangjeong (fried and braised chicken), which commanded a 45.32-per-cent share.

Chicken deliveries also enjoyed double-digit growth of 10.5 per cent, while baked goods saw a 15.51-per-cent increase.

Meanwhile, demand for hansik (traditional Korean cuisine) fell 2.17 per cent during the same period.

“Even as the food service industry staggered due to inflation, food delivery stayed strong. Those about to start a business in food service may want to consider the data related to the proportion of delivery service for each sector,” an official from Finda said.
