Smuggling attempt foiled

A local man was detained by the marine police of the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) yesterday for allegedly attempting to smuggle 1,840 cartons of contraband into the country through the waterway on October 18.

A raid on a boat was conducted following a public tip-off of two suspicious boats heading towards Menunggol River, according to the RBPF.

Upon noticing the marine police, the boat driver attempted to flee but was nabbed before he could escape.

The contraband was found hidden near where the boat was found during an initial investigation. The suspect and the seized items were transported to the marine police headquarters, and the case handed over to the Royal Customs and Excise Department for further investigation.

The RBPF said in a statement that the agency will continue its efforts in eradicating smuggling activities, including along the waterways in the country.
