A 68-year-old local man got a two months jail sentence after he pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday to theft.
Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid heard from DPP Hajah Siti Mu’izzah binti Haji Sabli that the defendant, Haji Mohamad bin Mumin took two buses from his house in Lambak to Gadong on February 1, 2020.
As he arrived at Gadong about 11am, he came across a pick-up truck with its engine left running and seemingly unattended at a shop.
A delivery man who drove it was unloading items into the shop at the time.
The defendant saw a sling bag inside the pick-up truck and took it and left.
The defendant took out BND14 cash from a wallet found in the bag.
He then threw away the bag and the wallet with its other contents into a disposal area. The delivery man on coming back realised his sling bag had gone missing and lodged a police report.
Police investigations were aided by a CCTV camera at the shop premises which caught footage of the defendant opening the pick-up truck door and taking the sling bag away.
This led to the defendant’s arrest.
