    Silat tournament kicks off in Belait

    A three day Silat Competition for the Belait District organised by the Brunei Darussalam Pencak Silat Federation (PERSIB) began yesterday In conjunction with the upcoming 75th birthday celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam at the Gudang Beras Multi-purpose hall, Kuala Belait.

    This year’s competition saw 76 participants from the Belait District competing over various categories.

    This included Wiralaga Tanding for men and from age 17-35, Wiragana Tunggal for men and women, Wiraganggha for men and women, Wiraloka Jurus Wajib Bergu for adult men and women, Wiralaga Tanding for male and female aged 14-17, Wiralaga Tanding for male and female aged 12-14, Wiralaga Tanding for boys and girls aged 10-12, Silat Cakak Asli for adults 17 and above, Silat Cakak Asli for ages 14-17, Kuntau for adults 17 and above, Kuntau for ages 14-17, Kuntau for pre-teen aged 12-14, Berkolompok Campuran, Free Solo/Weapon for male, and Free Solo/Weapon for teenagers and pre-teens.

    Following briefing from the officials from the federations to the participants, the ring was then opened for the competition with a silat performance of Kuntau Cempaka number 12 by Kamis bin Othman.

    The competition continues today andtomorrow. Participants who ranked in their categories will go on to compete in the finals on July 18 at the Mumong Sports Complex, with the champion of the finals being chosen to represent the district in the upcoming national
    silat competition.
