I would like to raise the issue of cleanliness at the beaches of our beautiful Abode of Peace.
I visited the beach at Jerudong recently and was appalled and sad to see, abandoned on the beach, umpteen plastic bottles, aluminium trays and other litter. How can some in our community, be they locals or foreigners, have such poor civic consciousness, and display such disregard and carelessness?
We are blessed to be living in this serene Land of Unexpected Treasures with its pristine forests, greenery, beaches, seas and natural reserves. Yet, some people are so ungrateful and unappreciative of the treasures they have.
As cleaning campaigns do not seem to address the issue, will it be possible for the relevant authority to recruit staff to patrol the beaches, especially during weekends; have signage put up to remind the public to clean up after themselves; and put up more dustbins?
As it is important to start with our very young, we need to teach them in school and at home to love, respect and care for our environment. We should count our blessings and remember that not all people around the world have this unique opportunity to live in such a peaceful and beautiful country such as ours.
