Shedding light on the role of NGOs

Forty-one individuals and 11 volunteers participated in DivEARTHsified, an Amazing Race inspired event, at Sengkurong Sixth Form Centre (PTE Sengkurong) yesterday.

The event, organised by Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA Brunei) alumni Tan Yan Zhen, Chew Fang Lyn, Iman bin Abdul Walid, Nurul Hidayatul Syafiqah binti Muhammad Ali Firdaus and Suzardi bin Muhammad Aliyas and supported by the United States (US) Embassy in Brunei Darussalam, aimed to empower more youth to advocate and help raise awareness on local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the role they play in the community.

Among the invited NGOs were PawsUp, Kilang ReRoot, Reef Check Brunei and ASEAN Youth Advocates Network (AYAN) Brunei.

Public Affairs Officer at the US Embassy in Brunei Darussalam Jeff Barrus attended as the guest of honour.

SOA Brunei founder and special guest Shaima Mislias, in a speech, said the alumni underwent capacity building and public speaking training prior to the event.

Meanwhile, participating teams raced against time to reach the four checkpoints before the others did in a bid to snatch the top spot.

The guest of honour presented tokens of appreciation and certificates of participation before the announcement of the teams’ standings in the race and a prize presentation.
